Broadway Rush, Lottery & Standing Room, Explained
How digital lotteries, in-person rush, student rush and standing room typically work on Broadway and at some Off-Broadway theaters, based on the rules each show publishes. The details differ from show to show, so always confirm on the official site.
Quick take
- A digital lottery is an online drawing for a small block of seats. At most shows we track, entries close the day before the performance and each winner may buy up to two tickets.
- In-person rush means going to the theater box office on the day of the show, often right when it opens, for a limited supply of seats, usually two per person.
- Student rush and age-based programs ask for a valid student ID or proof of age, and some cap you at a single ticket.
- Standing room is usually sold at the box office, and most shows that offer it do so only when a performance is sold out.
- As of October 2026, every show sets its own windows, limits and ID rules, so check the official site before you plan around any of them.

Four ways shows release last-minute seats
Many Broadway productions set aside a small number of seats for people who can be flexible about timing. As of October 2026, the shows in our records use four main tools: a digital lottery you enter online, a rush sold at the box office or through a phone app on the day, a student or age-based rush with an ID check, and standing room for sold-out nights. Some shows use three of them, some use one, and some use none at all.
This guide is built only from the rules that productions, theater companies and theater owners publish on their own sites. We describe the common patterns, then give real examples from current shows so you can see how much the details vary. We do not quote prices here: the amounts change, and the show pages on this site carry live information instead.
Rules differ from show to show
Lotteries and rush are run show by show. Each production decides whether to run one, when entries open, how many tickets a winner can buy and what ID you need. Two shows in neighboring theaters can follow completely different clocks.
As of October 2026, a few examples show the range. Buena Vista Social Club opens its lottery at midnight the day before each performance and draws winners twice that same day. Wicked takes entries from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the day before. Hamilton runs a weekly cycle, and The Book of Mormon draws once a month. Treat every example below as a snapshot and confirm on the show's official site before you rely on it.
Shows that have not opened yet often post their policies late. As of October 2026, Galileo had not announced a rush or lottery policy, and Purple Rain listed its rush, lottery and standing room plans as still to come. The coming soon page lists other upcoming shows.
How digital lotteries work
The idea is simple. You submit an entry online for a specific performance, a random drawing picks the winners, and each winner gets the chance to buy a small number of seats within a set time. A win gives you the right to buy tickets, not the tickets themselves.
The usual day-before pattern
Most lotteries we track close the day before the performance. As of October 2026, the windows look like this:
- Wicked: entries from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the day before, for select performances only.
- MJ The Musical: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern Time on the day before, for a limited number of seats.
- Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Lost Boys: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern Time on the day before, with a lottery for every performance.
- Buena Vista Social Club and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York): entries open at midnight the day before, with drawings at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- A Few Good Men: Lincoln Center Theater draws at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the day before each performance.
- The Outsiders: entries open at midnight on the day before the performance.
- SIX: entries are made the day before, with one entry per person.
- Other Desert Cities: entries open daily at noon Eastern Time, with a lottery for every performance.
Some shows publish less detail. As of October 2026, Hadestown, Maybe Happy Ending, The Great Gatsby, The Rocky Horror Show and Paranormal Activity confirm that they run a digital lottery but do not post the entry window on the official pages we checked. Operation Mincemeat advertised a daily lottery with a 3 p.m. cutoff for the next day's show on an archived version of its official site, so check the live page. Billy Crystal 860 runs its lottery for next-day performances and may add a digital cancellation line when a night sells out.
Weekly and monthly lotteries
A handful of shows work further ahead. As of October 2026, the Hamilton lottery, known as Ham4Ham, covers every Broadway performance and is entered through the official Hamilton app. Entries open on Friday at 10 a.m. and close the following Thursday at noon, covering the week after that. Winners hear on Thursday afternoon and may buy up to two tickets. Entrants must be at least 18 and bring photo ID.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child runs Friday Forty, a weekly drawing that releases a limited number of low-price seats for the following week. As of October 2026, The Book of Mormon marks its 15th year on Broadway with a monthly lottery: a drawing is held by the 15th of every month, and those picked can purchase a maximum of two seats for chosen performances in the month after.
Where the Hamilton lottery came from
The Hamilton lottery has a back story. In 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda and members of the cast began staging short free performances on the street outside the theater before the drawings, and those mini-shows became known as Ham4Ham. The lottery moved online in January 2016, the street shows wrapped up in August 2016, and the app version followed in August 2017.
Where you enter
Always start from the show's official website or app. As of October 2026, several official sites send lottery entrants to a ticketing platform: Telecharge for Buena Vista Social Club, Two Strangers and The Outsiders, Broadway Direct for The Lost Boys, and Lucky Seat for Other Desert Cities. Lincoln Center Theater runs the A Few Good Men lottery itself, and Hamilton uses its own app. Going through the official site is the simplest way to make sure you reach the real entry page.
What happens if you win
A win comes with a deadline. As of October 2026, Wicked gives winners one hour to pay online, and Hadestown takes payment by card. Most shows cap a winner at two tickets. Several warn that lottery seats may come with a partial or obstructed view, including MJ The Musical, The Lost Boys, Other Desert Cities and Hadestown. If a clear sightline matters to you, read the fine print on the entry page before you submit.
How in-person rush works
Rush is the low-tech option. A small number of seats goes on sale at the theater box office on the day of the performance, and at several shows buyers are served first come, first served. You pay at the window and leave with tickets for that night or that afternoon, with no drawing involved.
Timing your visit
Many shows release rush seats the moment the box office opens. As of October 2026, Wicked sells its rush at the Gershwin Theatre window starting at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday, with a maximum of two per person and a warning that some seats have a partial view. The Outsiders starts at 10 a.m., or noon on Sundays, with two tickets per buyer. Two Strangers begins at 10 a.m. on performance days at the Longacre Theatre, also with a limit of two.
At Just in Time, rush seats are released on performance day as soon as the window at the Circle in the Square Theatre opens. They cannot be transferred, the limit is two per person, and the seat could be anywhere in the house, standing room included. The Lost Boys also sells its rush when the Palace Theatre window opens, two per buyer, and notes that the view may be partial.
More shows with in-person rush
As of October 2026, these productions also confirm a day-of rush at the box office:
- Billy Crystal 860 at the Imperial Theatre, for every performance, first come, first served, plus a digital rush for same-day shows.
- Buena Vista Social Club at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, up to two per person while seats last.
- Maybe Happy Ending at the Belasco Theatre, in order of arrival.
- Oh, Mary! at the Lyceum Theatre, in limited numbers. Its lottery opens at midnight the day before, and winners are picked at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
- Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Marquis Theatre, for that day's performance, up to two per person.
- Paranormal Activity at the August Wilson Theatre, up to two per person.
- The Great Gatsby at the Broadway Theatre, with a lower price for students.
- The Rocky Horror Show at Studio 54, in limited numbers.
Box office hours
Because rush often starts at opening time, the hours of the window matter. As of October 2026, the Lena Horne Theatre box office for SIX opens Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Buena Vista Social Club keeps the same hours and stays open until curtain on evenings with a show. The Marquis box office for Stranger Things opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday, closing at 7 p.m. that day. The Outsiders and Two Strangers both list 10 a.m. openings during the week and noon on Sunday.
Digital rush
A digital rush works like an in-person rush, only on your phone. A small batch of seats for that day's performance is released online at a set time, typically without a drawing.
As of October 2026, Paranormal Activity releases its digital rush at 9 a.m. on each performance day, up to two per person. Other Desert Cities uses a mobile app at 9 a.m. Eastern Time on the day, also capped at two, with a note that the view may be partial. Billy Crystal 860 offers a digital rush for same-day performances. The Fantasticks, due at the Hayes Theater, lists a same-day digital rush that opens at 9 a.m.
Set an alarm if you want to try. Since the release time is fixed and supply is small, being online right when it opens is the main thing you control.
Student rush and age-based programs
Several shows reserve rush seats for students or younger theatergoers, and these come with stricter ID rules. As of October 2026:
- A Few Good Men at the Vivian Beaumont Theater: full-time students with a valid ID can buy one ticket at the box office from two hours before the show, when seats remain. It is not offered at every performance.
- SIX: student rush at the box office on the day of the show, with a valid student ID and a limit of two.
- The Fantasticks: student rush two hours before curtain, two seats for each student ID, open to those studying full-time in high school or college, plus a 30 Under 30 program for patrons 30 and under with valid ID, two per performance.
- The Outsiders: a separate rush for buyers 30 and under, with valid ID.
- Mix and Master, a Roundabout production at the Todd Haimes Theatre: student rush half an hour before curtain, limited to one seat for each valid student ID.
- Wicked: student and military rate tickets for select Tuesday through Thursday performances, sold in person at the Gershwin Theatre box office with valid ID.
Membership programs for younger audiences
Two theater companies run ticket programs by age rather than by day. As of October 2026, Roundabout's Hiptix is a free club with low-price tickets for theatergoers aged 18 to 40, and Hiptix High covers high school students aged 14 to 18. Lincoln Center Theater runs LincTix for U.S. residents aged 18 to 35. As of October 2026, LincTix seats for The Sound of Music were listed as sold out.
What to bring
When a program asks for ID, bring the real thing. As of October 2026, the student rules we track ask for a valid student ID, often for full-time students; Atlantic Theater Company specifies a physical card. Hamilton asks lottery entrants to be 18 or older with photo ID. Check the exact wording on the official page before you go.
Standing room
Standing room is the most limited option of all. As of October 2026, most shows in our records that offer it sell it at the box office, and most release it only when a performance has no seats left:
- & Juliet: a limited number of places, only for sold-out performances, in person at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre box office.
- Hadestown: sold at the Walter Kerr Theatre window when a performance sells out, on the day itself, two per person.
- Maybe Happy Ending: sold at the Belasco only when the performance is otherwise full.
- MJ The Musical, at the Neil Simon Theatre: goes on sale two hours before curtain on sold-out nights.
- SIX: sold at the box office only for sold-out performances.
- Just in Time: the theater has standing positions, and they can turn up as rush tickets.
Where standing room depends on a sellout, you may not know until the day whether it will exist for a given performance. It works best for people who are already near the theater and can change plans quickly.
Off-Broadway rush and lotteries
Off-Broadway companies run their own programs, and several of them sell rush in the last hour or two before curtain rather than at opening time. These theaters do not have their own pages on this site, so you will find them through the shows. As of October 2026:
- ANON at MCC Theater: a digital rush through a mobile app at 9 a.m. on performance days, plus general and student rush at the box office from two hours before curtain.
- I Became We at Atlantic Theater Company: rush at the box office from two hours before curtain, up to two per person, and a student rush at every performance, one per physical student ID. There is no rush for sold-out shows.
- Fish at WP Theater: a small general rush 30 minutes before curtain, one per person and open to everyone.
- Clifford Odets' Waiting for Lefty at Classic Stage Company: rush one hour before curtain, one per customer, with a separate student rush that requires a valid student ID.
Further examples, also as of October 2026:
- School Pictures and Two Girls at the Cherry Lane Theatre: a limited number of rush seats one hour before each performance.
- The Heart at Roundabout's Laura Pels Theatre: general rush at the box office on the day, possibly upstairs, and student rush half an hour before curtain.
- Perfect Crime: rush tickets at the box office on the day.
- Midnight at the Daryl Roth Theatre: a digital rush every day at 9 a.m., two per person.
Lotteries exist off Broadway too. As of October 2026, Kramer/Fauci at St. Ann's Warehouse follows the venue's lottery for most performances, open from noon the day before until 5 p.m. Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre draws two days ahead: entries run from 12:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and each winner can buy up to two tickets.
Students have a few more options. As of October 2026, AMAZE Magic at New World Stages sells a student rate in person only, with a valid student ID, and The Infinite Wrench offers reduced-price student tickets at its box office with ID. Not every show joins in: Going Bacharach: The Songs of an Icon offers neither a lottery nor rush, and the Lincoln Center Theater student rush does not cover LCT3 shows at the Claire Tow Theater, such as creation stories and all the important importants. Browse more on the Off-Broadway page.
Planning a rush or lottery day
A little preparation helps. As of October 2026, these steps follow from the rules above:
- Pick a few shows you would be happy to see and read each official ticket page the day before, noting when its lottery closes and when its box office opens.
- Enter each lottery separately, once. Some shows accept only one entry per person.
- Keep your phone and payment card at hand after the drawing time; Wicked, for one, gives winners only an hour to pay.
- Bring a physical ID, and a student card if you plan to try a student rush.
- For in-person rush, arrive before the box office opens and confirm the seat location before you pay.
Have a backup. If nothing comes through, the schedule shows what is playing tonight. Each show page lists running time, the theater and upcoming performances, which is useful when you are choosing between several rush options on the same day.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need ID to pick up lottery or rush tickets?
Often, yes. As of October 2026, Hamilton requires lottery entrants to be at least 18 and to show photo ID, and the student rush rules in our records ask for a valid student ID, sometimes for full-time students only. Atlantic Theater Company asks for a physical student card. Programs for younger buyers, such as rush for those 30 and under, also check ID. The safest habit is to carry a photo ID and any student card on the day and to read the official rules for your show.
How many tickets can I get through a lottery or rush?
Usually two at most. As of October 2026, where a Broadway lottery or rush in our records publishes a limit, it is almost always two tickets. Some programs are stricter: the A Few Good Men student rush is one ticket per student, and Off-Broadway rush at WP Theater and Classic Stage Company is one per person. If you are a group of three or more, plan for separate entries or a different way to buy.
Are lottery and rush seats partial view?
Sometimes. As of October 2026, MJ The Musical, The Lost Boys, Other Desert Cities and Hadestown warn that lottery seats may have a partial or obstructed view, and the Wicked rush carries a similar note. At Just in Time, a rush ticket can be anywhere in the house, including standing room, and Roundabout's general rush may place you upstairs. Read the entry page closely if sightlines matter to you.
Does every Broadway show have a lottery or rush?
No. Each production decides for itself. As of October 2026, Galileo had not announced a policy and Purple Rain listed its plans as still to come, while some shows run their lottery only for select performances, as Wicked and Maybe Happy Ending do. Off Broadway, Going Bacharach: The Songs of an Icon offers neither option. Check the official site of the show you want before building a plan around it.
When is standing room sold?
Mostly for sold-out performances, and usually at the box office. As of October 2026, that is how & Juliet, Hadestown, Maybe Happy Ending and SIX describe it, and MJ The Musical starts selling standing room two hours before curtain on sold-out nights. Hadestown limits buyers to two places. Because it depends on a sellout, you cannot count on standing room in advance.
Can I enter a lottery weeks ahead?
Rarely. As of October 2026, most lotteries in our records close the day before the performance, and Little Shop of Horrors closes two days before. The longer cycles belong to Hamilton, which runs weekly; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, whose Friday Forty covers the following week; and The Book of Mormon, which draws monthly for performances in the next month. For anything further out, regular tickets are the way to go.
