What it is

I Became We is a new work by playwright Mona Pirnot and composer Jack D. Coen, and it does not sit comfortably in one category. The words belong to a single narrator, spoken in the first person, yet no one actor carries them. Instead, a choir of classically trained singers takes on the telling, setting everyday contemporary speech to music in the style of classical choral writing. Atlantic Theater Company bills the piece as a world premiere play and also calls it a world premiere musical event. Some listings file it with the musicals; another calls it a play with music.

It is an original work, with no book, film or earlier play credited as a source. Atlantic Theater Company is producing it as a limited engagement on its mainstage, the Linda Gross Theater. The company is a nonprofit Off-Broadway house in Chelsea that dates from 1985, when David Mamet and William H. Macy started it with acting students. This is the first production of its 2026-27 season, which consists of four world premieres.

The story

The narrator is an artist in her mid-thirties who is weighing one of the weightiest choices a person can face: whether or not to have children. The piece does not divide her story among a cast of characters. It stays with her point of view, and the choir is how that point of view reaches the audience.

The show is described as loosely based on Pirnot's own experiences, which puts it in the territory of autofiction. Beyond the setup, this guide sticks to what the production has made public.

The writing

Pirnot is credited as playwright and, along with Coen, as lyricist. The language is meant to sound like conversation today instead of verse, and the music borrows its manner from choral tradition. Plain speech carried by trained voices is the idea the evening is built on.

Her earlier work includes I'm Assuming You Know David Greenspan, a solo piece performed by David Greenspan, won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show and a Special Citation Obie. Private earned a Helen Hayes Award nomination, and I Love You So Much I Could Die received Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel nominations. In 2022 Pirnot received the Berwin Lee Brown Playwrights Award, and she has a commission in development with Transport Group.

Coen is a New York playwright, composer and lyricist who trained at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music and also holds a music post at the Church of the Epiphany. For this production he serves as music director, orchestrator and arranger as well. One of his musicals won the 2025 Relentless Award, and he was a Kleban Prize finalist in 2024. I Became We marks his Off-Broadway debut as composer and co-lyricist.

The production

The singers are on stage, so the choir is something you watch as well as hear. The show is described as a choir of 16, while the cast page bills 17 singers as Choir, plus three understudies. As of October 2026, the singers have backgrounds in classical, opera and choral work, and their biographies mention ensembles such as the Clarion Choir, New York Virtuoso Singers and the Oratorio Society of New York.

Confirmed details of the staging are limited, so this guide says little about how the designers use the Linda Gross stage.

History

Previews began on October 16, 2026, and the opening is set for October 27, 2026. Both Pirnot and Benson have worked at Atlantic before. Pirnot's I'm Assuming You Know David Greenspan ran at Atlantic Stage 2 from March 29 to April 30, 2025, under the direction of Ken Rus Schmoll.
