How to Pay Less for Broadway Tickets

Rush lines, digital lotteries, standing room, youth programs, group rates and free performances can all lower what a Broadway or Off-Broadway seat costs. Here is how each route works and where its rules come from.

Quick take

  • Every show sets its own rush, lottery and standing room rules, so read the show's official site before you build a trip around one of them.
  • Many digital lotteries take entries the day before the performance, and winners can usually buy one or two seats, as of October 2026.
  • As of October 2026, in-person rush tends to start when the box office opens on show day, and standing room is mostly sold only once every seat is gone.
  • Students, younger buyers (with age caps of 30, 35 or 40) and groups of about 10 people have separate programs at a number of theaters, as of October 2026.
  • The Public Theater has given away first performances by lottery, and buying through official channels avoids resale tickets a theater may refuse.

How lower-price tickets work on Broadway

There is no single citywide program for lower-price seats. Each production decides for itself whether to hold back tickets for a rush, a lottery or standing room, how many to release, and for which performances. Companies with more than one stage, such as Roundabout and Lincoln Center Theater, often post a single policy page that covers several of their productions. Two shows on the same block can work in completely different ways.

Prices are not fixed either. The Book of Mormon is reported to be one of the first Broadway shows to price its premium seats the way airlines sell flights, so the figure for a given seat can rise and fall with demand. This guide explains how each route to a lower-price seat works and leaves out amounts, which differ from show to show and change often.

What the programs have in common

As of October 2026, these programs share a few traits:

  • The number of seats is small, and no program promises a ticket to everyone who tries.
  • One or two tickets per person is the usual cap.
  • Seats can land anywhere in the house. Several shows warn that lottery or rush seats may have a partial view, and at least one sells standing positions as rush.
  • Student offers ask for a valid student ID, and the weekly lottery for Hamilton is open only to adults with photo ID.

Where to check the rules

Rules change, so treat every detail below as a snapshot from October 2026 and confirm it on the show's official site before you go. For Off-Broadway, look on the producing company's site. Some new productions announce their policies late: as of October 2026, Galileo and Purple Rain had not yet published rush, lottery or standing room details.

Flexible dates help with every route below. Our schedule lists the performances on any given day of your trip.

In-person rush at the box office

How a general rush works

A rush is a small batch of tickets sold in person on the day of the performance, first come, first served. At many Broadway shows it starts when the box office opens. As of October 2026, here is how some of the longer-running shows handle it:

Other Broadway productions with a same-day, in-person rush as of October 2026 include Maybe Happy Ending at the Belasco Theatre, Buena Vista Social Club at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Marquis Theatre, Paranormal Activity at the August Wilson Theatre, The Rocky Horror Show at Studio 54 and The Great Gatsby at the Broadway Theatre. Billy Crystal 860 offers an in-person rush for every performance at the Imperial Theatre.

Digital rush

A few shows move the same-day sale to your phone. As of October 2026, Paranormal Activity puts digital rush tickets on sale at 9 a.m. on each performance day, two per person. Other Desert Cities releases its digital rush through an app at 9 a.m. ET, with a limit of two and a warning that seats may have a partial view. Billy Crystal 860 adds a digital rush for same-day shows on top of its box office line. Off-Broadway, MCC Theater's ANON drops a digital rush at 9 AM on performance days.

Planning a rush morning

Because the sale usually starts at opening time, the box office hours tell you when to show up. As of October 2026, the Lena Horne Theatre box office for SIX opens at 10 AM Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday, while the Richard Rodgers Theatre box office for Hamilton opens at 10 AM on weekdays and Saturdays and at 11 AM on Sundays.

Arrive before the doors open, carry your student ID if you are using a student offer, and have a second show in mind in case the batch runs out. A rush suits travelers who can keep an evening open.

Digital lotteries

The day-before pattern

A lottery replaces the morning line with a random drawing. You enter online, and if your name comes up you get a short window to pay. As of October 2026, many daily lotteries follow a similar rhythm: you sign up on the eve of the show, and the entry window shuts by mid-afternoon.

As of October 2026, The Outsiders opens its lottery at midnight the day before the show, and SIX takes one entry per person the day before for every performance, with up to two tickets per winner. Other Desert Cities opens entries daily at noon ET, limit two. Billy Crystal 860 draws for next-day performances. Hadestown, The Great Gatsby, Maybe Happy Ending, Paranormal Activity and The Rocky Horror Show also run digital lotteries; Hadestown takes card payment and warns that a lottery seat may come with an obstructed sightline.

Weekly and monthly drawings

A few long-running shows use a longer cycle. As of October 2026, Hamilton runs a weekly lottery, known as Ham4Ham, inside its official app. Entries for the following week open on Friday at 10 AM and close the next Thursday at noon. Winners hear back on Thursday afternoon and can buy up to two tickets, and entrants must be 18 or older with photo ID.

As of October 2026, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre has Friday Forty, a weekly lottery that releases a limited number of low-price tickets for the week after. The Book of Mormon at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre marks its 15th year on Broadway with a monthly lottery: names are picked by the 15th of every month, and each winner can purchase as many as two seats for chosen dates in the month that follows. These longer cycles reward planning a few weeks ahead.

Which site runs each lottery

Each show names its own lottery channel on its official site. As of October 2026, The Lost Boys runs its lottery on Broadway Direct, Other Desert Cities uses Lucky Seat, and Buena Vista Social Club, The Outsiders and Two Strangers use Telecharge. Hamilton keeps its drawing in the show's own app, and Lincoln Center Theater runs the A Few Good Men lottery itself. To avoid lookalike sites, start from the link on the show's official site.

Off-Broadway lotteries

Smaller houses run lotteries too. As of October 2026, Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre draws two days before each performance, with entries open from 12:00 AM to 3:00 PM and up to two tickets per winner. St. Ann's Warehouse, home of Kramer/Fauci, runs a lottery for most performances, taking entries from noon to 5pm the day before. Our Off-Broadway listings show what is playing at these and other smaller stages.

Standing room, returns and standby lines

Standing room at sold-out shows

Standing room is the fallback for performances with no seats left. On Broadway it usually goes on sale only after a show sells out, and you stand for the whole performance, so check the running time on the show page first. As of October 2026:

Returns, cancellation lines and standby

When people return tickets at the last minute, some theaters resell them on the spot. As of October 2026, the SIX box office sells returned seats before each performance, and Billy Crystal 860 says it may run a digital cancellation line for sold-out shows.

Off-Broadway houses, as of October 2026, use similar systems with their own twists. For sold-out performances of ANON, MCC Theater starts an in-person cancellation line two hours before curtain. St. Ann's Warehouse may sell standby tickets one hour before showtime, cash only and up to two per person. At 59E59 Theaters, home of Mrs. Stern Wanders the Prussian State Library, sold-out days bring a random standby drawing: names are collected in person from an hour before curtain, and winners do not choose their seats. Masquerade resells returns through its Black Tie Standby line, which can form an hour ahead; sales run until the last entry time, and the dress code still applies.

Student, youth and member programs

Student rush

Students often have a line of their own. As of October 2026:

  • A Few Good Men offers full-time students with valid ID one ticket each at the box office from two hours before curtain, at some but not all performances. Lincoln Center Theater's student rush does not cover LCT3 productions at the Claire Tow, such as creation stories and all the important importants.
  • SIX sells a student rush on the day of the show with valid student ID, limit two.
  • Second Stage's The Fantasticks at the Hayes Theater holds a student rush two hours before curtain, with a limit of two for each full-time high school or college student who shows ID.
  • Roundabout runs its student rush half an hour before curtain, a single seat for each student who shows valid ID, for shows such as Mix and Master at the Todd Haimes Theatre and The Heart.
  • The Great Gatsby sells student rush at a lower rate than its general rush.

Off-Broadway, as of October 2026, ANON adds a student rush with a school ID two hours before curtain, and I Became We at Atlantic Theater Company holds one for every show, limited to a single seat per physical student ID. Clifford Odets' Waiting for Lefty at Classic Stage Company runs a separate student rush, AMAZE Magic sells a student rate in person only, and The Infinite Wrench has reduced-price student tickets at the box office with valid ID.

Programs for younger theatergoers

Several companies extend their offers past graduation. As of October 2026, The Outsiders runs a separate rush for buyers aged 30 and under with valid ID, and Second Stage's 30 Under 30 program sets aside two seats per performance of The Fantasticks at a reduced rate for the same age group.

Roundabout's Hiptix, introduced in 2000, is free to join for theatergoers aged 18 to 40, and Hiptix High covers high school students aged 14 to 18. Lincoln Center Theater's LincTix is a free program for U.S. residents aged 18 to 35; as of October 2026, LincTix seats for The Sound of Music were listed as sold out. For its In the Heights run, New York City Center included an Access Club for audiences 40 and under among its reduced-price programs.

Memberships

Some Off-Broadway tickets are also sold through TDF to its members. As of October 2026, TDF members could buy seats for King of the Yees at Signature Theatre at member rates.

Military rates and weekdays

As of October 2026, Wicked sells student and military rate tickets in person at the Gershwin Theatre box office, with valid ID, for select Tuesday through Thursday performances. That is the only weekday pattern our records confirm. We found no official rule that midweek or matinee seats cost less at other shows.

Free performances and school programs

Free first performances at The Public

The Public Theater sometimes opens a new production with a free show. Under its Joseph Papp Free Performance Initiative, the first performance of Good Time Charlie on September 24, 2026 and the first preview of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on October 8, 2026, in the Newman Theater, were free, with tickets handed out by digital lottery. The company also runs Free Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater. As of October 2026, the way to catch the next free opening is to watch The Public's own announcements.

Student and school programs

Some free-ticket programs are built around schools. During its first year, Dolly: A True Original Musical plans to offer 30,000 free tickets to New York City public middle and high school students, in partnership with the NYC Department of Education. As of October 2026, schools apply to bring groups, and individual students can ask for a pair of free seats so they can go with a parent or guardian.

As of October 2026, The Outsiders runs the Stay Gold Project, which pays for student tickets for middle and high school groups on Broadway and on tour, alongside student matinees and a free study guide. Buena Vista Social Club has its Student Matinee Mission for the city's middle and high school students, a partnership of the show, The Situation Project and the NYC Department of Education. For its In the Heights run, New York City Center set aside 10,000 reduced-price tickets across four programs: a Heights Rush event, a Community Ticket Initiative, a student matinee and the Access Club.

Group rates

When a group rate applies

In our records, ten tickets is the most common starting point. As of October 2026, Wicked sets its group minimum at 10, and Hamilton and & Juliet offer group sales for a party of at least 10. Buena Vista Social Club, Just in Time and MJ The Musical send groups of that size to Broadway Inbound. Hamilton also caps regular orders at eight tickets, so a larger party has to go through its group channel.

Off-Broadway, as of October 2026, Perfect Crime and Friends The Musical Parody handle groups of 10 or more through the box office, and AMAZE Magic books groups from the same size. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show starts its group rates at eight people and will consider added weekday performances or a full buyout. Families planning a visit can browse our family shows to see what suits younger audiences.

Protect what you spend

Buy through the official channel

A lower price only helps if the ticket gets you in. As of October 2026, New York City Center warns that tickets bought from third-party resellers may not be valid. Masquerade goes further: its tickets cannot be resold at all, and guests holding resale tickets are turned away at the door. At least one Off-Broadway production states that any trouble with a third-party purchase has to be sorted out with whoever sold it. Starting from the show's official site is the simplest protection.

Know the exchange rules before you buy

Most theaters treat sales as final. As of October 2026, Second Stage lets you swap The Fantasticks tickets for a fee, as long as you ask at least 48 hours ahead. Roundabout permits exchanges for The Heart, subject to fees and availability, but no refunds. Signature Theatre keeps tickets and fees for King of the Yees non-refundable and needs at least 48 hours' notice for any exchange. Perfect Crime will move your tickets to another performance through the box office if you are ill.

Every child needs a seat

Budget a full ticket for every member of the family. As of October 2026, Shubert houses such as the Broadway Theatre and the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre require a ticket for everyone and do not admit children under four. The Hudson Theatre also requires a ticket for every person, with no lap seats, and the August Wilson Theatre does not admit children under five.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see a Broadway or Off-Broadway show for free?

Sometimes, usually through a lottery. The Public Theater has opened productions such as Good Time Charlie and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Joseph Papp Free Performances, giving out tickets by digital lottery, and it also runs Free Shakespeare in the Park. Some programs are only for students: as of October 2026, Dolly: A True Original Musical planned 30,000 free tickets for New York City public school students in its first year.

What is the difference between a rush and a lottery?

A rush is first come, first served: you buy tickets in person or online on the day of the show, often when the box office opens. A lottery is a random drawing that you enter in advance, usually the day before, and winners get a short time to pay. As of October 2026, some shows run both, and the rules differ by show, so check the official site.

Do I have to be a student to get rush tickets?

No. Many shows run a general rush open to anyone, such as Wicked, The Outsiders and Just in Time as of October 2026. Student rush is a separate line with its own limits, and it requires a valid student ID. Some theaters also offer programs for buyers aged 30 and under, 18 to 35 or 18 to 40.

How many rush or lottery tickets can one person buy?

Usually one or two. As of October 2026, most Broadway lotteries and rush lines in this guide cap purchases at two tickets per person or per winner, while some student rush offers, such as the one for A Few Good Men, allow a single ticket. Off-Broadway rush at some houses is also limited to one ticket per person.

Will a lottery or rush seat have a full view of the stage?

Not always. As of October 2026, shows including Wicked, The Lost Boys, MJ The Musical and Other Desert Cities warn that lottery or rush seats may have a partial view, Hadestown says some may be obstructed, and Just in Time may sell a standing spot as rush. You generally cannot choose the location.

Do young children need their own ticket?

At many theaters they do. As of October 2026, Shubert houses such as the Broadway Theatre and the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, along with the Hudson Theatre and the August Wilson Theatre, require a ticket for every person regardless of age, and several do not admit children under four or five. Plan a full seat for each child when you set your budget.

Are midweek performances less expensive?

Our records confirm only one weekday pattern. As of October 2026, Wicked sells student and military rate tickets in person, with valid ID, for select Tuesday through Thursday performances. We have no official rule saying that midweek or matinee seats cost less at other shows, so compare dates on each show's official site.
