What it is
The Visitors is a new comedy-drama by Bryna Turner, presented by Second Stage Theater as a world premiere Off-Broadway. Jenna Worsham directs. The production plays on the Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center.
It is a play about family and about the strange fact that you can know someone your whole life and still have to get acquainted with them as an adult. The tone sits between wry comedy and heartfelt drama, and the cast is a company of five. The story begins at Joanna's apartment in New York City.
The story
In her mid-thirties and living in New York, Joanna wants a child. Before going any further, she gathers her three siblings at her apartment, because she needs something from them, and it is a big thing to ask.
The visit forces the four of them to deal with one another as grown-ups. How the evening ends for the siblings stays out of this summary. The play's subjects are brothers and sisters, the wish to have a child, and what a family does when one member asks for a lot.
The writing
Turner is originally from Northern California and has written Phases of the Moon, At the Wedding and Bull in a China Shop, the last staged by LCT3 and other theaters. Turner has held a New Roots Residency and a MacDowell Fellowship, and has won Lincoln Center Theater's Emerging Artist Award and the Theatre Visions Award of the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.
The production
As of October 2026, the company is Esco Jouléy, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Will Pullen, Mary Wiseman and Danny Wolohan. Keenan-Bolger, a Tony Award winner, has Broadway credits in The Glass Menagerie, Mother Play and To Kill a Mockingbird. Pullen and Wolohan have also appeared on Broadway in To Kill a Mockingbird. Wiseman, who appeared on Broadway in Thérèse Raquin, led the cast of Turner and Worsham's earlier At the Wedding. Jouléy appeared on screen in Dying for Sex on FX and on stage in Wolf Play.
History
The Visitors is a world premiere, so its history starts in 2026. The earlier work by Turner and Worsham is At the Wedding, which had its own world premiere at Lincoln Center Theater's LCT3 at the Claire Tow Theater. Previews began March 5, 2022, and the production officially opened March 21, 2022.
