What it is

Angela's Mixtape is an autobiographical play by Eisa Davis about growing up in an activist family in California. Davis was raised alongside her mother and her aunt, Angela Y. Davis, an activist and professor, and the play looks back at that childhood through memory instead of telling it in a straight line.

Signature Theatre is producing the New York run, and the company lists it as a revival. It is scheduled for spring 2027 and is the final production of Signature's 2026-27 Off-Broadway season. As of October 2026, Davis is also among Signature's resident artists.

The story

The play is set around Oakland and Berkeley, California, in a household shaped by activism. Davis's mother and her aunt, Angela Y. Davis, are central to the family story, and the play follows Davis herself as she works toward a voice of her own.

Time bends in the telling, so the evening plays more like a set of linked memories than a single plot.

The writing

Davis wrote the play, and the title borrows from music culture: a mixtape is a collection of songs chosen by one person. The music is a blend of classical, pop, soul and hip-hop, and the scenes follow memory rather than a calendar.

The 2009 production was described as linking its scenes the way a DJ blends one record into the next. Signature's own description of the 2027 run also stresses memory, time and music.

History

Angela's Mixtape was staged in New York in 2009 at the Ohio Theatre. New Georges presented it with the Hip-Hop Theater Festival, and it ran from April 6 to May 2, 2009. Liesl Tommy directed, and Davis performed in it. The cast also included Linda Powell, Kim Brockington, Denise Burse and Ayesha Ngaujah.

That production jumped across several decades and showed Davis at different ages. The 2027 Signature run brings the play back to New York as a revival.

Creative team

Eisa Davis wrote the play. She has been a Pulitzer Prize finalist for her play Bulrusher, and she appeared in Passing Strange when that show moved from Berkeley Rep to Broadway.

Charlotte Brathwaite directs the Signature production. Check Signature Theatre's website for designers, musicians and other collaborators as they are announced.
