What it is
The Annunciation is a new play by T. Adamson, announced as a world premiere at Playwrights Horizons. The Off-Broadway company named it in May 2026 as part of a nine-production season announcement, with Miranda Cornell directing and a run planned for spring 2027.
It is a family drama in Texas, told through Mexican-American women of three generations. The action gathers them around a dying grandmother, and the company describes the play as a look at faith, morals and identity, both personal and political.
The story
In the story, Gabi travels back to Texas because her grandmother María is dying and her mother needs help with her care. Descriptions of the script place the family in San Antonio. From her hospital bed, María has visions of angels and demons, and earlier descriptions of the script add that she believes she is the Virgin Mary.
While her grandmother approaches the end of her life, Gabi faces a turning point of her own. The relationships among the three women, grandmother, mother and granddaughter, sit at the center of the evening. The tone is described as surreal and tender, with a good deal of dry wit.
The writing
T. Adamson grew up in Texas, has Anglo and Mexican family roots, and writes plays and works as a theater artist in New York. Earlier work includes Usus with Clubbed Thumb, The Straights with JACK, My Dead Father, the Salesman, and The Natural Horse, which Alleyway Theatre and Brisbane Festival presented.
Adamson's honors include the Maxim Mazumdar Award, the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award in 2022 and a Falco/Steinman Commission from Playwrights Horizons. Adamson holds an MFA from Hunter College and teaches at SUNY Purchase.
History
In 2025 the script made the shortlist of 15 plays for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting. Playwrights Horizons had already supported the playwright's work, including through a Falco/Steinman Commission.
Creative team
Miranda Cornell directs, and this is her Playwrights Horizons debut.
