What it is
Are the Bennet Girls Ok? is a play by Emily Breeze that adapts Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. It keeps the Bennet household at the center but shifts the focus: the story is built around the relationships among the Bennet women, not around period manners and formal speech.
The Public Theater presents the play at its home at 425 Lafayette Street in winter 2027. It is a New York return of a production by Bedlam, the Off-Broadway company whose Artistic Director, Eric Tucker, directs. The play had its world premiere in 2025, when Bedlam staged it at the West End Theatre.
The writing
Breeze's script sets aside the period-style language and manners of Austen's novel. In their place it looks at the ways sisters can be close, silly, petty, at odds and fiercely protective of one another, all within the Bennet family.
Breeze has said she writes adaptations to work through a question that troubles her. For this one, the question concerned the choices made by the heroine, and the answer she settled on was protectiveness toward her sisters. That idea gave her the reason to retell the story at all.
History
The world premiere played at the West End Theatre in New York. Previews began on September 14, 2025, and opening night was October 5, 2025. The run was first set to end on October 19, 2025, was extended by one week, and was later extended again.
The 2025 production had nine actors. Eight of them played named roles: Mrs. Bennet, Jane, Lizzie, Mary, Kitty, Lydia, Charlotte and Georgiana. The ninth was billed in a role called Men. Casting for the Public engagement should be checked on the Public's production page.
The Public announced the return on April 29, 2026, as part of its Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 season. The Public has produced Free Shakespeare in the Park since 1962 and new work downtown since 1967.
Creative team
Emily Breeze wrote the play and Eric Tucker directs. Tucker is the Artistic Director of Bedlam, the company behind the production.
For the 2025 production at the West End Theatre, the team around Tucker included choreographer Susannah Millonzi, scenic designer John McDermott, costume designer Mariah Anzaldo Hale and lighting designers Eric Southern and Cheyenne Sykes. Tucker also served as sound designer, and Caitlin Morley was associate director. Check the Public Theater's production page to see who joins the engagement at the Public.
