What it is

Rachel Chavkin directs Welcome Table, a new play by James Ijames and a world premiere at The Public Theater in downtown Manhattan. The Public announced it on April 29, 2026, as part of its 2026-27 season and placed it in the winter 2027 slot. Because it is a world premiere, there is no earlier production to compare it with.

The subject is a real conversation. In 1963, the writer James Baldwin and a group of artists and activists sat down with Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to talk about the country's future during the civil rights struggle. Ijames takes that meeting as his starting point and moves it into an afterlife, so the people at the table face questions about their own legacy.

The story

The play begins from a historical episode. In the spring of 1963, Baldwin sent a telegram to Robert F. Kennedy that faulted his brother's administration over the violence surrounding the civil rights struggle. Kennedy phoned Baldwin back, and the meeting that followed gathered artists, thinkers and activists in one room.

The room also held Lena Horne, Harry Belafonte, Lorraine Hansberry and Jerome Smith, a Freedom Rider. Ijames does not restage the meeting as a documentary. He sets his version in an afterlife, where the same figures look at what their work left behind.

As of October 2026, the production has not opened and no synopsis beyond this premise has been published, so the page stops at the setup.

The writing

Ijames won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Fat Ham, his adaptation of Hamlet. That play ran at The Public in the summer of 2022, then reached Broadway in April 2023. Another of his plays, Good Bones, was a commission from a Washington, D.C., company, Studio Theatre, and was staged in 2023.

Welcome Table brings him back to The Public with another work that starts from an existing story and reworks it, this time a moment from American history rather than a classic of the stage.

Creative team

Ijames writes the play and Chavkin, a Tony Award winner, directs it. As of October 2026, The Public's announcements name no cast and no other members of the creative team, such as designers or a composer. Check The Public's website for casting news.
