What it is
Feast of Rabbits is a new play by Aleshea Harris, who also directs it. Playwrights Horizons, the Off-Broadway company on West 42nd Street, has scheduled it for summer 2027 as the last production announced for its 2026–2027 season.
The play is a satire set in an American frontier town. A homesteading family arrives, a community takes root, and the writing uses that history to examine the American Frontier as a national myth. The company announced the play in May 2026, together with the rest of its season.
As of October 2026, the company has not published a cast, a running time or an age recommendation for the production, so those details are left out here.
The story
The setup is simple. The Forsythes, a homesteading family, come across a town that stands completely empty, abandoned for reasons that remain a mystery. They settle it together with friends and relatives, and the community begins to prosper.
From the outside, the place looks picturesque and keeps to itself. Yet something frightening is hiding among its trees. The company has released nothing further about the plot, and this page stays with that setup.
The writing
Feast of Rabbits is a satire. Its subject is the Frontier story Americans tell about themselves, and the play presents that story as hiding an open wound. The scale is epic, and choral singing and choreography are built into the way the story is told.
Harris has written for New York stages before. Is God Is had its first run at Soho Rep in 2018. On Sugarland reached the stage at New York Theatre Workshop in 2022 and was among the finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2023.
The production
Choral singing and choreography are the two features the company has described so far. As of October 2026, there is no word on the designers, the musicians or the performers, and the company has not said which of its stages will house the play.
Creative team
Aleshea Harris is both the playwright and the director, and no other creative credits have been announced. As of October 2026, the production page names her alone.
Her honors include the Relentless Award from the American Playwriting Foundation in 2016, which went to Is God Is, and a Windham-Campbell Literature Prize, awarded to her in 2020. Is God Is also won three Obie Awards, in 2018.
