What it is
Born in the Dirt is a new play by Kimberly Belflower, staged as a world premiere by Lincoln Center Theater in its Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. It is a limited engagement of 10 weeks. The action unfolds in a tiny hometown in the American South, and the company pitches it as funny and emotional, with Southern roots like those of John Proctor Is the Villain, which Belflower also wrote.
Belflower and director Danya Taymor worked together on that Broadway staging, and this production is their first reunion since. Lincoln Center Theater is a nonprofit founded in 1985, and its artistic director, Lear deBessonet, has led it since the 2025-26 season.
The story
Maddy Grace has spent most of her life planning her escape from the tiny Southern town she comes from. She builds a life in Los Angeles, but it collapses, and she ends up back home in a job she never wanted.
She takes work at the place her town is known for: a doll hospital, where dolls are sewn by hand and sold to collectors worldwide. Rather than just clock in, Maddy decides to point a camera at the women who work there and make a documentary about them.
Behind the camera she finds that neither the women's story nor her own is as simple as she believed.
The writing
Georgia's Appalachian region is where Belflower's small hometown sits. Emory University is where she teaches playwriting. Her play Lost Girl opened at Milwaukee Rep in 2018 and won a national playwriting prize from the Kennedy Center, the Darrell Ayers award. The work that made her name is her Broadway play, nominated for the 2025 Tony Award for Best Play.
That earlier piece unfolds in a rural Georgia high school classroom, where present-day students become the lens for a fresh look at The Crucible. Born in the Dirt trades the school for a workplace but keeps the Southern setting. Its central ideas are art, community and the effort of making something durable.
The production
The Newhouse is Lincoln Center Theater's Off-Broadway house, below the Vivian Beaumont, in the same building. It seats 299 around a thrust stage, and the seating chart changes slightly from one production to the next.
History
Belflower's Broadway play was first staged professionally in 2022, in the nation's capital at Studio Theatre. It reached the Booth Theatre on April 14, 2025, with Taymor directing, received seven Tony nominations and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Play.
Lincoln Center Theater announced Born in the Dirt on June 23, 2026, as part of its 2026-27 season. It is the last play of that season at the Newhouse, following The Whoopi Monologues, August Wilson's Seven Guitars and Playing Burton. Previews are set to begin on April 14, 2027, with opening night planned for May 6, 2027.
Creative team
Kimberly Belflower is the playwright. Danya Taymor directs. Taymor is an Obie Award-winning director who won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for The Outsiders; no woman has won that category at a younger age. Her staging of Belflower's Broadway play brought a nomination for the 2025 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. Her earlier Lincoln Center Theater credits include Pass Over at LCT3 and queens.
