What it is

Parcel from America is an Irish musical about Christmas in rural County Limerick in the 1950s. It is set to open Off-Broadway at Theatre Row as a New York premiere and a limited engagement, presented by producer Ann LeClaire with Parting Glass, a nonprofit company that counts this musical among its projects.

The material comes from Irish storyteller Tomáseen Foley. Jahnna Beecham, Malcolm Hillgartner and Michael J. Hume share the book and lyrics, and Hillgartner wrote the music with Kevin Corcoran. The show reaches New York after a 2022 run in Dublin.

The story

Foley grew up in West Limerick, where a box from relatives in America was the main symbol of Christmas. Such a box often held a year's supply of clothing and an envelope of cash. The musical builds on that memory and follows one remote parish in the days before the holiday.

A small boy and a lonely older woman anchor the plot. The boy promises her a special delivery from the son she has drifted apart from, while the other villagers wait for parcels of their own that cross the ocean. The show is about what one particular parcel does to the whole community. A narrator and the postman, Davey the Post, help carry the tale.

Two themes run underneath. One is Irish emigration, seen from both sides: the people who had to leave and the people who stayed. The other is looking after neighbors, taken from an Irish proverb about living in their shelter.

The music

The score consists of original songs with deep roots in traditional Irish music. Corcoran is the composer, arranger and music director. He is an Irish pianist and session musician who works with the band Villagers.

As of October 2026, he leads a five-piece band from the keyboards. Isaac Alderson plays whistle, flute and uilleann pipes, and he is a 2022 winner of the All-Ireland Senior Championships. Tom Fitzgerald plays bouzouki and mandolin, Katie Wasko plays fiddle, and Aimée Farrell Courtney plays bodhrán. Farrell Courtney is a World Bodhrán Champion and also played in the Dublin band.

The production

Performers have been brought together from Ireland and from the US. As of October 2026, Alex Sharpe plays Bridge, a role she also played in Dublin, Michael Grennell plays the Narrator and Clare O'Malley plays Bridie. All three were in the Dublin cast. Sharpe is an Irish soprano who was once a principal singer with Celtic Woman.

History

The idea began in December 1998, when Beecham and Hillgartner heard Foley tell the story. About twenty years later, with Hume, they optioned the rights. The script had its first table read in Dublin in October 2019, followed by two concert readings in Chicago that December. A staged reading took place in August 2021 in Ashland, Oregon, after a COVID delay.

The Irish premiere opened on May 10, 2022, at Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin, directed by Sullivan, and the producers describe the run as a sellout. The writers donated their royalties from it to a relief organization's work in Ukraine. The New York premiere was announced on August 19, 2026. Previews are set to begin on October 28, 2026, with an opening night on November 4, 2026.
