What it is

Kilgallen tells the story of Dorothy Kilgallen, the New York newspaper columnist and television panelist whose doubts about the Kennedy assassination drive the plot. The York Theatre bills it as a true-crime musical and a musical mystery, so expect a biography with an investigation running through it.

The York is producing the show as a world premiere in a limited run at the Theatre at St. Jean's, its home on the Upper East Side. It is the second of two world-premiere musicals on the company's 2026-27 mainstage season, following Truly, Howard Hughes.

The York is a nonprofit Off-Broadway company founded in January 1969. It develops new musicals and revives overlooked ones, and its list of productions passes 980. It holds a special Drama Desk Award and a special Outer Critics Circle Award, both given for its work with musicals.

The story

The musical follows Kilgallen through the years when she ranked among the most influential journalists in America. The York presents her as a driven, openly ambitious woman who is comfortable around entertainers, elected officials and people who hold real power in New York.

After the assassination of President Kennedy, Kilgallen becomes convinced that the public has been handed an incomplete account, and the plot follows her effort to prove it. She keeps digging even once she understands that the work puts her own safety at risk.

The real Kilgallen gave a writer plenty to work with. Starting in November 1938 she wrote a daily column that was eventually syndicated to 146 newspapers, and from the first broadcast in 1950 she sat on the panel of the CBS game show What's My Line?. In 1954 she reported on the Sam Sheppard murder case and spoke out against the guilty verdict. In 1964 she wrote about a conversation with Jack Ruby during a recess in his trial, and later published his Warren Commission testimony in three front-page installments. Since 2025 a corner on the Upper East Side, at East 68th Street and Park Avenue, has carried the name Dorothy Kilgallen Way.

The production

As of October 2026, Donna Vivino plays Dorothy Kilgallen. Her Broadway debut came in the original Les Misérables, in the role of Young Cosette, and she later played Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway. The York has said that more cast and creative team members are still to be announced.

Daniel Zimmerman designs the scenery, Teresa Snider-Stein the costumes, Paul Miller the lighting and Peter Brucker the sound. With a choreographer on board, movement is part of the staging as well as the songs.

History

The York announced Kilgallen on April 28, 2026, as part of its 2026-27 season. The news that Vivino would take the title role, with Berliner directing, followed on October 16, 2026. Previews are set to begin on November 28, 2026, with the opening on December 3, 2026.

The Theatre at St. Jean's became the York's home after a water main break flooded its previous space, in the basement of St. Peter's Church, in January 2021.
