About Off-Broadway Shows
60 shows are running Off-Broadway this week: 24 musicals and 34 plays, plus 2 special engagements. 42 more have dates to start, and 33 are announced without dates.
Off-Broadway theaters are smaller than Broadway houses, from about a hundred seats to just under five hundred, and their calendars vary: some shows play eight times a week, others five or six, and many are limited runs. Nine shows here have announced a closing date; the next few weeks are listed under closing soon.
Most shows here run between 1 h 20 min and 2 h, intermission included; the shortest is Violet's Magic Glasses at 50 min, the longest Saigon at 3 h 20 min.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Broadway and Off-Broadway?
The size of the theater. Broadway houses seat 500 or more and are clustered around Times Square; Off-Broadway theaters seat roughly 100 to 499 and are spread across Manhattan. It says nothing about quality: several Off-Broadway productions have later moved to Broadway. See all Broadway shows.
