What it is
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a musical comedy based on Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts strip. Clark Gesner is credited with the book, the music and the lyrics. The characters are Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Snoopy and Patty, and the evening is made of ordinary childhood moments: crushes, homework, games and daydreams.
This listing is the Encores! production at New York City Center, a limited run on the Mainstage in February 2027. The venue calls it a concert performance, which means the actors may carry scripts. Sam Pinkleton directs. The staging uses the show as it stood in 1967 and 1971, not the revised 1999 Broadway version.
The story
Nothing in the show builds toward a single plot. It works like a sequence of strips: a short scene, a punchline or a song, then on to the next. Charlie Brown is the hub, and the opening number has his friends toasting him as a good man despite all his bad luck.
Act one is mostly about small frustrations. Lucy sets her sights on Schroeder and gets nowhere. Linus cannot let go of his blanket. Charlie Brown fumbles with a kite and a Valentine's card, while Snoopy lounges on his doghouse, lost in daydreams. The act ends with the kids' book reports on Peter Rabbit.
Act two leans into imagination. Snoopy pictures himself as a pilot in World War I, Lucy sees herself as a queen, and a glee club rehearsal ends in a quarrel. Charlie Brown tells a pen pal about a baseball game he lost, and Lucy teaches Linus a handful of made-up facts about nature.
The music
Gesner started with the songs. In 1966 he recorded a concept album of Peanuts numbers, and the stage show followed in 1967. At City Center the orchestra plays the score under guest music director Meghann Zervoulis Bate. This staging uses the original version, so it leaves out the extra songs Andrew Lippa wrote for the 1999 revival.
The production
As of October 2026, David Hyde Pierce is cast as Charlie Brown, Danielle Brooks as Lucy, Jin Ha as Linus, Jeff Hiller as Schroeder, Ayo Edebiri as Snoopy and Rachel Dratch as Patty. Olivia Puckett and Kevin Zak are the understudies. Check the official website for the latest cast.
History
In the East Village, Theatre 80 hosted the Off-Broadway opening on March 7, 1967. Joseph Hardy directed, and Gary Burghoff played Charlie Brown. The run lasted 1,597 performances and closed on February 14, 1971. The musical reached Broadway on June 1, 1971, at the John Golden Theatre, where it ran 32 performances.
A revised version came to Broadway in 1999, at the Ambassador Theatre. Michael Mayer directed and reworked the dialogue, Lippa contributed new songs and orchestrations, and Sally took over the part that had been Patty's. That revival ran 149 performances, and Roger Bart and Kristin Chenoweth each won a Tony Award for it. Cast recordings exist from both the 1967 and 1999 productions.
