What it is

A Christmas Carol the Musical is a family holiday musical built on the 1843 novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Brenda Bell wrote the book and lyrics, Michael Sgouros composed the score, and Bell's own company produces it at The Players Theatre in Greenwich Village. The company calls its version a faithful retelling that keeps Dickens's own characters: Scrooge, the spirits, Tiny Tim and the Cratchit family.

This is the same Off-Broadway production returning for a holiday engagement, as it has every winter since 2009, not a new title or a transfer. The producers call 2026 the 18th anniversary season, set to begin in late November 2026.

The story

The setting is Victorian London at Christmas. A musical prologue introduces Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who tells the townspeople that Christmas is humbug. That night four ghosts call on him, beginning with his late business partner Jacob Marley, who arrives rattling his chains and disputes Scrooge's belief that making money is a noble goal.

Three spirits of Christmas follow. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge back to his sister Fan, to Belle, the woman he loved, and to his old employer Mr. Fezziwig, and shows him as both a boy and a young man. The Ghost of Christmas Present leads him to his nephew Fred, and then to the home of his clerk Bob Cratchit, where Tiny Tim lives with the other Cratchit children. Two children, Want and Ignorance, appear as a warning about caring for those around him.

The creators call the show cheerful, with darker moments, especially around the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

The music

The score blends original songs with traditional Christmas carols. What sets it apart is the band: a trio plays everything live on percussion alone, using about 30 tuned and untuned instruments. Vibraphone and marimba carry melody and harmony, while sleigh bells and a mark tree add effects. The musicians are in view of the audience, and Sgouros, who plays in the trio himself, says some people watch them as much as the stage.

Mankind Is Your Business is the number in which Marley's ghost confronts Scrooge. A cast album by the 2015 Players Theatre cast came out in 2018, with 21 tracks and a running time of about 56 minutes.

The production

Carolers open the show and welcome the audience into Dickens's England. Actors play several parts each, and singers perform in the center aisle. In this adaptation every ghost is played by a woman, and the Ghost of Christmas Present appears as a holiday sprite instead of the large, jolly figure from the book.

The 2025 season had 16 performers in named roles, three children alternating as Tiny Tim and a youth ensemble of six. Eric Fletcher played Scrooge that year, as he had in every season since 2011. The permanent set was designed by the London-based artist Cleo Pettitt, and for 2026 it gets an updated look inspired by British pantomime.

History

The show premiered in 2009 at The Players Theatre and has returned each holiday season since. The 2021 season had 34 performances, and the 2026 run was announced in May 2026.

In the scenes of the future, Scrooge watches his housekeeper, an undertaker's assistant and a laundress strip his belongings, and a businessman says he is glad Scrooge is gone. Shaken, Scrooge wakes determined to change. He sends a poor girl off to buy the Cratchits a goose and mends things with his friends and neighbors.
