What it is
Wold Meteor is a new musical set for the 2026–2027 season at Playwrights Horizons, the Off-Broadway company on West 42nd Street. Kate Attwell wrote the play, Sunder Ganglani wrote the songs and Dustin Wills directs. It is billed as a world premiere and marks Attwell's first production at Playwrights Horizons.
Playwrights Horizons is a not-for-profit theater, founded in 1971, that develops new work by contemporary American playwrights, composers and lyricists. Page 73 co-produces, and Working Theater is a partner on the project. The companies describe it as a musical allegory aimed at the present day, with a darkly funny tone.
The story
The story begins in 1795, when a large stone drops out of the sky and lands on Emory Miller's farm. Press notes place the farm in Yorkshire, England. Rumors of fire and strange lights spread afterward, and the townspeople split into opposing camps.
The conflict centers on money and fear. Poverty leaves the townspeople open to manipulation, and an increasingly wealthy few use that to their advantage. The show's guiding question is what sacrifice might bring about real change.
Emory Miller is the only character named in the material released so far. As of October 2026, no cast has been announced.
The music
Sunder Ganglani wrote the songs. Press notes describe the show as inspired by Bertolt Brecht and as dealing with disaster capitalism, the idea that a crisis becomes a chance for profit.
As of October 2026, no song list, musical style or orchestra size has been published, so there is little yet to say about how the score sounds.
History
Playwrights Horizons announced Wold Meteor on May 28, 2026, as part of its 2026–2027 season, which also includes other world premieres. The play grew out of a Playwrights Horizons commission supported by the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, and it is planned for winter 2027.
Creative team
Attwell writes plays and television and makes devised theater, working between New York and London. She took part in Page 73's Writers Group in 2016. Her earlier play Testmatch, a comedy about women's cricket and colonial India, was staged at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco in 2019 and in a UK production in 2024.
Ganglani supplies the songs, and Wills directs. As of October 2026, designers and other collaborators had not been announced.
