What it is
The Gorgeous Nothings is a new Off-Broadway musical that will have its world premiere at the Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) in 2027. PAC NYC and Life Jacket Theatre Company produce it, and Travis Lee Russ is the creator and writer.
The musical is inspired by true events. In New York in the 1930s, a hidden section of the Men's Penitentiary on Welfare Island held men who had been jailed for homosexuality. The production uses the ward's historical nickname, the Fag Ward, and gives its Christmas pageant the title The Fag Follies. Both names carry a slur, and both are the show's own wording.
The story
The action takes place inside that secret ward. Welfare Island is the former name of Roosevelt Island. The show follows six inmates and weaves their stories into the yearly Christmas pageant that was held in the ward. That pageant gives the evening its frame: broad, campy numbers on the surface, and the lives of the men who performed them underneath.
These men were not invented from scratch. By 2020, the research team led by Russ had whittled thousands of arrests down to seven true stories, and the first spark was a holiday follies that the prisoners themselves put on.
The music
Songs from the Great American Songbook make up the score. In 2020, early descriptions of the project also promised lesser-known period material. Russ has called music central to the show.
Dan Schlosberg is credited with the orchestrations and, with Alejandro Senior, the arrangements. Thomas Hodges is credited as developmental music consultant. For the 2020 concert version, Joe Kinosian directed the music and made the arrangements. No song list has been published, so there are no individual numbers to point to yet.
History
The project has been in development for several years. A concert presentation took place at Joe's Pub in February 2020. That June, a recording of the concert streamed online, and the money raised went to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. At that stage the project was billed as a play with music that was growing into a full musical.
Staged readings followed at the Library for the Performing Arts, part of the New York Public Library, in December 2022 and at New York Live Arts in February 2024. A second concert at Joe's Pub came in June 2024. Workshops took place at Abrons Arts Center with ART/NY in December 2024 and at Baryshnikov Arts in May 2025 and again in December 2025. The team also worked in residencies, among them the Drama League from 2020 to 2022, Yaddo in 2023, and Baryshnikov Arts Center, Millay Arts and Blue Mountain Center in 2025.
Creative team
Danny Mefford directs and choreographs. David Zinn designs the sets, David Reynoso the costumes, Isabella Byrd the lighting and Megumi Katayama the sound, and Andy Diaz is the prop designer. Dale Brown, CSA, casts the show together with Life Jacket Theatre Company.
Kevin Jennings is the executive producer. Baryshnikov Arts, the NYC LGBTQ Historic Sites Project and the Making Gay History podcast are the producing partners. The research behind the script was a large effort: Russ is credited as lead researcher, with many further researchers and contributors on the team.
