What it is
Miss Step is a new musical comedy built around dance and 1980s aerobics competitions. Kit Yan and Melissa Li wrote the book and lyrics, and Li also composed the music. Playwrights Horizons is presenting it as a world premiere at its home at 416 West 42 Street, with performances planned for fall 2027.
The company bills the show as a dance comedy, and the credits point the same way. Connor Gallagher directs and co-choreographs, and a second choreographer, Jay Jackson, shares the dance work with him. The musical is expected to open the company's 2027–28 season.
This is an early listing. Playwrights Horizons announced the musical in May 2026, together with the rest of its upcoming slate. As of October 2026, the company has not published preview or opening dates, and tickets are not on sale yet.
The story
The central character is Pam, a trans woman who works at a toll booth in New Jersey. Staying unnoticed is what she enjoys most about her life.
That calm ends with the death of her estranged father. Going through what he left behind, Pam uncovers secrets that lead her somewhere she never expected: a competitive aerobics scene that has never moved past 1988. The company describes the show as high-spirited and openly queer in outlook.
History
The musical has been in development for some time. It is reported to have received a first draft commission from The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle along the way.
The Playwrights Horizons production is billed as the world premiere. The company has placed it at the start of its 2027–28 season, which follows the nine new works it announced for 2026–27 and beyond.
