What it is
Lost in Del Valle is an autobiographical solo play and a dark comedy. It looks back over about four decades of its author's life, from his twenties into his sixties, and the road runs through sex, fame, addiction and a stretch in a Texas jail. The play is written and performed by Ned Van Zandt, an actor and writer born in Texas, and it is his debut as a playwright. One actor takes on 19 characters in a single act of 65 minutes with no intermission, with a live guitarist onstage.
This is an Off-Broadway production at the SoHo Playhouse, produced by Craig Balsam and Ari Edelson with The Orchard Project. It is a limited engagement and a return one: the play first appeared in New York in the spring of 2026 and came back to the same theater in the fall.
The story
In 2006, Van Zandt was arrested on a charge of possessing meth for distribution and held at the Travis County Correctional Complex outside Austin, known as Del Valle. He tells the story as himself. His family offered tough love instead of rescue, and nobody would pay his bail, so he stayed inside. By his own account in the play, he spent five months there.
Behind bars, a leader of the Texas Aryan Brotherhood recognizes him from daytime television and offers to protect him if he will teach acting. The deal turns out to carry sexual demands as well. Meanwhile Van Zandt starts telling the other inmates about earlier chapters of his life, and the play keeps cutting away to them.
One is the Chelsea Hotel, where he lived during the late 1970s. He arrived in the very week that Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen did, dealt drugs there, and at 24 saw Vicious arrested after Spungen died. Another is the Los Angeles music scene, with its wild parties and his friend Chaka Khan. A third is Texas, where friends Gary and Belinda ran a makeshift meth lab.
The play does not move in a straight line. It opens with a near-fatal heroin overdose, in which the cries of his cat bring the help that saves him, and from there it jumps between the 2006 jail time and the earlier episodes of his life.
The writing
Everything comes from one performer. Van Zandt voices himself and all the others, among them an inmate who is his cellmate, the Brotherhood leader, a volatile fellow prisoner, Belinda, and the Chelsea Hotel couple, Vicious and Spungen. The structure is a collage of memories rather than a timeline, so the audience has to follow the jumps between decades.
The material is organized around addiction, survival and sobriety, and around the idea that art and performance can redeem a life. True crime and incarceration run through it too. The tone is dark comedy, and the story is drawn from Van Zandt's real life rather than invented.
The production
The staging is spare by design: one actor, one guitarist and the lighting. Moore is already playing when the audience enters, and the music was co-written with Atkins, so the evening begins with sound before any word is spoken.
The fall engagement was staged on the Main Stage at the SoHo Playhouse, a black box theater with a proscenium stage and 178 seats. The spring run took place in the Huron Room, the downstairs cabaret space, which holds 55 seats and has a full bar.
History
The piece was developed at The Orchard Project, and its world premiere came at the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The U.S. premiere followed at the SoHo Playhouse in the Huron Room, a limited engagement of 25 performances. Previews started on February 23, 2026, the official opening was April 9 and the run continued through May 3. The spring run sold out.
A return engagement began previews on September 14, 2026, and opened on September 23. It was the first show in the theater's first curated fall season. The fall run was extended by two performances beyond its original schedule.

Creative team & cast
Creative team
Van Zandt has deep Texas roots. His great-grandfather, Khleber Miller Van Zandt, helped found Fort Worth, and the musician Townes Van Zandt is his second cousin. He is an actor by trade, with a Broadway credit in The Iceman Cometh and screen work that ranges from Daredevil and Nurse Jackie to Lost. In the Netflix series Painkiller he took the part of Rudy Giuliani. Documentaries such as Sad Vacation and Who Killed Nancy? feature him recalling his Chelsea Hotel days with Vicious and Spungen. Away from the stage, he is a partner and managing director at Transcend NYC, a home for men in recovery.
Amir Arison directs and is also an associate producer. He was in the cast of the series The Blacklist on NBC for ten seasons, from 2013 to 2023, and that is where he and Van Zandt first met. Arison made his Broadway debut in The Kite Runner, which brought him the 2023 Theatre World Award, and he appears in the Netflix series The Beast in Me. He worked on developing this piece for close to a decade before it reached The Orchard Project stage.
JR Atkins is the music consultant and Mike Moore is the live guitarist. Colin Grenfell was credited with lighting design for the spring 2026 run.
The producers bring development and Broadway experience. Ari Edelson founded and runs The Orchard Project, a development lab that has developed more than 500 productions, and his producing credits include The Wiz on Broadway. Craig Balsam's credits include Hadestown, Hangmen, The Lehman Trilogy, Stereophonic and the Sunset Blvd. revival, and he co-founded the Razor & Tie label.
