What it is
This musical comedy comes from American Sing-Song, the two-person team of Jake Brasch and Nadja Leonhard-Hooper, who both wrote it and perform it. Playwrights Horizons, the Off-Broadway company on West 42nd Street, presents it in its 2026–2027 season. The production is billed as its Off-Broadway debut, following a run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The idea is deliberately outrageous. In Nebraska, the members of a religious sect keep butt plugs in at all times, and the company calls the result an epic musical love story that is both perverted and sincere. It is a bawdy show with a heart. The two writers also play every character, so the whole company fits in one pair of performers.
The story
The setup comes from a Nebraska sect whose members believe a wrathful God will pull unplugged sinners up into the sun. The catch is that the sect turns out to be right. A decade after the event the show calls the Great Sucking, two best friends, Luke and Connor, leave home and cross America on a mission they believe is holy. What they find on the road is stranger and more extreme than anything they expected.
The music
The score is played live on a keyboard, the only instrument the company mentions. The songs are performed by the same two people who wrote the show. The company has not yet published a song list, so there are no individual numbers to point to.
The production
As of October 2026, the company's page lists Jake Brasch and Nadja Leonhard-Hooper as the two performers. They share every role between them, with a keyboard for the music and a foley table for live sound effects. The staging promises an epic scale from the leanest possible means: two people, a keyboard and a table of noisemakers, with the audience's imagination doing the rest.
History
Before Playwrights Horizons, the show was staged at Ensemble Studio Theatre, Caveat and The Bell House, among other venues. It played the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2025 and returned to Edinburgh in 2026, with a limited summer run at Soho Theatre in London in between.
Playwrights Horizons announced the show on May 28, 2026, as part of its 2026–2027 season.
Creative team
American Sing-Song writes and performs big-cast musicals using only a keyboard and a foley table. Brasch graduated from The Juilliard School and works as a writer, composer, performer and clown; one of his plays, The Reservoir, has been staged at theaters including Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Leonhard-Hooper writes plays, musicals and movies and acts in them, and her work has reached audiences at Ars Nova and the Edinburgh Fringe.
Both writers came up through Youngblood, the early-career playwrights program at Ensemble Studio Theatre. RJ Tolan, who directs, has led that program for more than 20 years and has staged several American Sing-Song shows, including earlier versions of this one.
The design team is Emmie Finckel (scenic design), Hahnji Jang (costume design), Paige Seber (lighting design) and Eamon Goodman (sound design). Benjamin Nelson and David Tao of Nelson and Tao are the producers working with Playwrights Horizons on this run.
