What it is
Drunk Romeo & Juliet is a comic, partly improvised take on Shakespeare's famous love story, with one twist: before the show, one of the five actors downs five shots of whiskey and then tries to play a major role. The four sober actors do their best to keep the play on track. Since it depends on who is drinking and what they drink, no two performances are the same.
The show comes from The Drunk Shakespeare Society, the company behind the long-running Drunk Shakespeare. In New York it plays The Ruby Theatre, a small speakeasy hidden behind a library of more than 10,000 books in Midtown. It opened on May 30, 2025, as a 16-week limited engagement and kept running well past that. In autumn 2026 the venue is hosting the company's seasonal shows, and as of October 2026 Drunk Romeo & Juliet is scheduled to return to The Ruby on January 7, 2027, with performances on sale through April 4, 2027. No closing date has been announced.
The story
The plot follows Shakespeare's tragedy of two young lovers from the feuding Montague and Capulet families in Verona. Romeo meets Juliet at a ball thrown by the Capulets, and with Friar Laurence's help the two marry in secret, even as the feud between their families turns violent.
This version keeps a good share of Shakespeare's own lines but surrounds them with physical comedy, improvisation and added jokes. The lovers are no longer teenagers but grown-ups, and the drunk performer is free to steer the show and throw in gags of their own, which the rest of the cast then has to deal with.
The production
The evening starts before the play does. Audience members are offered a shot on arrival, and cast members mingle with the crowd, collecting details they can use later in the performance. The drinker for the night is chosen ahead of time and takes four shots of their drink of choice at the top of the show, plus a fifth that goes to an audience member they pick. The company says its drinking actors work on a regular rotation and are watched at all times.
The Ruby is a library-themed speakeasy, set up in the round, with a stage that runs like a runway through the room. Seats come in three rows: Stage Side in front, then Mezzanine and Balcony. At the far end of the runway sit two thrones for the Royal Experience, a package for two sold once per performance. The royals get crowns, champagne, cocktails, caviar and chocolates, plus the power to ring a bell and make the drinker carry out a request. If they are not satisfied, the actor drinks again. Cocktails, wine, beer and spirits can be ordered from your seat during the show, and a small selection of snacks is available.
The show is immersive, and audience members may be pulled into the action. The company asks that nobody touches a performer without clear consent.
In 2025 the New York company included Samuel Adams as Romeo and Sarah Ann Leahy, one of the actresses sharing the role of Juliet, along with Gracie Lee Brown, Ryan Farnsworth, Morgan Haney, Craig Jackson, Travis Raeburn, Ali Regan, Brandon Salerno and Sky Young.
History
The original Drunk Shakespeare began in 2014 in a Midtown bar that has since closed, and it grew into a company with venues in New York, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Dallas and Washington, D.C. In 2023 its actors, stage managers, bartenders and servers formed a union, Drunk Shakespeare United.
Drunk Romeo & Juliet debuted in April 2025 at The Emerald Theatre in Houston, which extended it through September. That spring it also played Phoenix and Washington, D.C. It then came to New York, replacing the standard Drunk Shakespeare at The Ruby. The run was first set to end on September 20, 2025, but continued into 2026. The company's other titles include Drunk Dracula, which plays The Ruby from September 15 to November 7, 2026, and A Drunk Christmas Carol, making its New York debut there from November 12, 2026, to January 3, 2027. The company also stages Drunk Pirates.
